Stones from William Christian's Dunkard Bottom home site, now submerged by Claytor Lake, were moved one mile to this location, occupied by the historic Haven B. Howe house. Currently the location of the Claytor Lake State Park Visitors Center, the Howe house was built between 1876 and 1879.

The New River Gorge National Park contains some of the most scenic views east of the Grand Canyons. Formed by the second oldest river on Earth, the Gorge extends approximately 53 miles with the park containing 70,000 acres of land from Hinton to Fayettville. Park Map

The New River Gorge Bridge, completed in October 1977, stands at a height of 876 feet above the New River. To celebrate the completion of this the second longest single-arched bridge in the world, Bridge Day is held annually, lasting three days, ending on the third Saturday of October.
